Benjamin's Watercolor Leaf Outline, Leaf Rubbing, and Leaf Man
Unit Three focused on the letter L for Leaf and the coordinating Bible truth was "I will live and grow in Jesus." This unit gave a lot of opportunity to talk about our relationship with Christ. For Bible, we took a plant and pulled a leaf off of the plant and talked about how that leaf cannot get the nourishment it needs apart from the plant. It cannot receive water and sunlight and it will eventually wither up. We compared this to ourselves-- how we will wither up on our own, but if we abide in Christ, we can grow. This example really helped Benjamin understand our need for Christ in our lives.
Some supplements we used for this unit:
ABC Memory Verse Cards
In addition to the Bible truth, we are also memorizing a Bible verse that begins with the letter of the week. I received these ABC Verse cards as a gift and they are by Dayspring, but I have also seen these online that would work just as well.
This week our L verse was: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind." Matthew 22:37
Christian Liberty Press Nature Reader K
This book is perfect for kindergarten, as it has a well-illustrated animal lesson for each letter of the alphabet. This week we learned about Leopards.
Berenstain Bear's Big Book of Science and Nature
We read facts about plants.
Listen and watch this cute clip of this story.
I checked out several non-fiction books on leaves and plants and we also enjoyed the following:
Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing the Trees by Jim Arnosky
Crinkleroot walks with you through the woods and examines the trees: their leaves, roots, stems, etc. He explains why all trees have individuals shapes and stories. It was educational and entertaining!
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Tiphanie Beeke
This was a sweet book about Fletcher, a tiny fox, who is concerned when his favorite tree turns brown.
Benjamin really enjoyed painting his own leaf man. We used a leaf as the body of his man and glued him on paper and then he paint his arms, legs, face, and a hat.
He also loved making a leaf rubbing and using watercolor paints to paint a leaf outline.
This lesson would have been more fun to do in the fall, but we still made it work in July!
