Unit Two: Moon

Benjamin's drawings of the phases of the moon

Unit Two focused on the letter M for Moon and the coordinating Bible truth was "I am the light of the world." We talked about how Jesus is like the sun and we are like the moon.  If we know Jesus, His light will shine on us and we can become a light too.  By itself, the moon does not have any light of its own, but it only reflects the sun's light.

My son really understood this concept when we went into the bathroom and turned out the lights.  We talked about how the mirror is not a light on its own.  Then, we shined a flashlight on the mirror until the light reflected by the mirror shined on our faces.

Benjamin was really excited about this unit and even wanted to know more facts about the planets, so I took extra time to read to him about the planets as well.

Some supplements we used for this unit:

ABC Memory Verse Cards
In addition to the Bible truth, we are also memorizing a Bible verse that begins with the letter of the week.  I received these ABC Verse cards as a gift and they are by Dayspring, but I have also seen these online that would work just as well.

This week our M verse was: "Make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God." Ephesians 5:19

Christian Liberty Press Nature Reader K

This book is perfect for kindergarten, as it has a well-illustrated animal lesson for each letter of the alphabet. This week we learned about Manatees.

Straw Rocket Template

This was such a fun craft that our kids enjoyed.  The kids can cut out and color a little rocket, and then they can make it fly by blowing on a straw.  They loved this activity!

Berenstain Bear's Big Book of Science and Nature
We read facts about the moon, planets, stars, etc.

My son loves these short storybot clips.  This was was about the moon.

This short clip was about the planets.

Listen and watch the story, Goodnight Moon

In addition to checking out educational books about the moon, I found a really cute book called Moon Rooster. It's about a rooster who decided to "bring up the moon" each night.  Super cute and enforced the different phases of the moon.

I asked Benjamin what he could do to be a light in the world this week, and he wanted to make a card for his grandmother, Mamadell.

I also found a pair of space pajamas on sale and Benjamin was super excited to wear them!  This was a fun week.
